# Colombo to Ella: train, bus or car

*There is no through train at the moment. Here is what there is instead.*

Published 16 September 2026 · last checked 16 September 2026 · https://srilankatour.travel/guides/colombo-to-ella

Almost everyone who plans this journey has seen the same photograph: a blue train on a green hillside, doors open, tea in every direction. That train is real and that stretch of line is open. The part that is not open is the bit that would carry you there from Colombo, and no amount of searching will change it before you fly. This is what we tell our own travellers, with the dates on it.

## Key facts

- **Through train Colombo → Ella:** Not running. The line is cut above Rambukkana as of 16 September 2026.
- **Running:** Nanu Oya → Haputale → Ella → Badulla, two trains a day each way, since 20 June 2026
- **The usual workaround:** Road to Nanu Oya or Nuwara Eliya, then the train down to Ella
- **Direct bus:** Colombo to Badulla via Ratnapura, 8–9 h, roughly LKR 1,000–2,000 (US$3–6)
- **Car with driver:** US$55–100 a day including fuel and the driver's board; 6½–8 h direct
- **Colombo → Kandy by rail:** Expected October 2026 per the Railway Department — an intention, not a timetable
- **Checked:** 16 September 2026

## The short answer, as of 16 September 2026

There is no through train from Colombo Fort to Ella, and there has not been one since Cyclone Ditwah tore up the hill country line in late November and December 2025. Trains leave Colombo Fort and run as far as Rambukkana. Above Rambukkana, the climb through Kadugannawa to Kandy is closed, and so is the long ascent from Kandy through Hatton to Nanu Oya. What has reopened is the far end of the line — Nanu Oya down through Haputale, Bandarawela, Ella and Demodara to Badulla — which came back on 20 June 2026 with two trains a day in each direction.

On 5 September 2026 the Railway Department's Chief Engineer said Colombo Fort to Kandy services via Peradeniya were expected to resume in October 2026, and the Deputy Minister of Transport repeated that on 7 September. Treat it as an aspiration rather than a published timetable. The blocker is the Black Bridge at Peradeniya, where a pier has tilted seven to eight degrees, and on 7 September 2026 rising Mahaweli water submerged the machinery working on it. The Transport Ministry's revised deadline for the whole Colombo to Badulla line is 31 December 2026; no date at all has ever been published for the Hatton to Nanu Oya stretch on its own. We re-checked the railway department's notices and the Sri Lankan press on 16 September 2026 and none of this had changed.

> **Why so many pages still say otherwise:** Most English-language pages about this journey were written before the cyclone, or copy one that was. If a page hands you a Colombo Fort departure time and a nine-hour run to Ella with no caveat, it is describing 2024. One live oddity adds to the confusion: an isolated local service still shuttles between Nawalapitiya and Hatton, so those stations show trains on timetable sites while connecting to nothing at either end. Check the date on anything you read about Sri Lankan trains this year, including this page.

## The three ways to do it now

### Road to Nanu Oya, then the train down — the scenic half

This is what we arrange, and what we would do ourselves. Go by road from Colombo to Nuwara Eliya — about six hours with a stop, longer if you leave Colombo in the morning rush — sleep there, and take the train from Nanu Oya the next morning. Nanu Oya to Ella is the section with the tea slopes, the tunnels at Idalgashinna and the Nine Arch Bridge at Demodara, which is to say it is the section every photograph you have seen was taken on. You lose the first half of the old journey, which ran through Kitulgala and Hatton, and honestly you lose the less good half.

Two trains a day run in each direction, on the timetable Sri Lanka Railways issued with its notice of 18 June 2026 and still current on 16 September 2026. Going down towards Ella, train 1005 leaves Nanu Oya at 09.00 daily, calls at Haputale at 10.28 and reaches Ella at 11.27 and Badulla at 12.16; train 1015 leaves Nanu Oya at 14.30 every day except Wednesday and reaches Ella at 16.57. On Wednesdays the tourist service, the Ella Odyssey, takes that slot instead, leaving Nanu Oya at 13.00 for Ella at 15.21.

| Direction | Departs | Ella | Arrives | Runs |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Nanu Oya → Badulla (1005) | 09.00 | 11.27 | Badulla 12.16 | Daily |
| Nanu Oya → Badulla (1015) | 14.30 | 16.57 | Badulla 17.46 | Daily except Wednesday |
| Nanu Oya → Ella (1043, Ella Odyssey) | 13.00 | 15.21 | — | Wednesdays only |
| Badulla → Nanu Oya (1016) | 09.00 | 09.52 | Nanu Oya 12.16 | Daily except Wednesday |
| Badulla → Nanu Oya (1006) | 15.00 | 15.52 | Nanu Oya 18.06 | Daily |
| Badulla → Nanu Oya (1044, Ella Odyssey) | 07.45 | 08.43 | Nanu Oya 11.29 | Wednesdays only |

Nanu Oya to Ella is two and a half hours on paper and three to four in practice, because these trains lose time and nobody minds. It stops at Ambewela, Pattipola, Ohiya, Idalgashinna, Haputale, Diyatalawa, Bandarawela and Demodara, which is the whole point — Pattipola is the highest station on the network and Demodara is the loop under its own line.

### The direct bus — cheap, long, and genuinely uncomfortable

Buses to Badulla leave central Colombo from the Bastian Mawatha terminal, a few minutes' walk from Fort station, and from the Makumbura Multimodal Centre at Kottawa on the southern edge of the city, which is where most of the air-conditioned intercity services now start. The route runs south-east through Ratnapura and Balangoda, climbs the Beragala pass and drops towards Wellawaya. Some services turn up through Ella itself; many stop at Kumbalwela Junction, about five kilometres short, where a tuk-tuk into Ella is a fifteen-minute ride.

Fares depend entirely on what you board. Ordinary buses are a few hundred rupees; an air-conditioned intercity seat was quoted at around LKR 1,700 (about US$5) in mid-2026. Resale websites advertising the same journey at LKR 6,000–7,000 are selling a private minibus seat, not a bus ticket, so buy at the counter. Journey time is the real cost: booking sites claim five to six hours, our drivers and passengers say eight to nine, and there is no luggage hold — a large case sits in the aisle or on your knees. If you are travelling with children or more than a daypack, this is not the option.

### A car with a driver, door to door

The direct route is the same one the bus takes — Ratnapura, Balangoda, Beragala, Wellawaya — and takes six and a half to eight hours depending on how long it takes to clear Colombo. It is a long day and not a beautiful one until the last ninety minutes, when the road climbs into Ella Gap. The alternative is the route through Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, which is around nine hours of driving before you stop for anything, and should be split over two or three days with nights in Kandy and Nuwara Eliya. That version is not a transfer, it is the trip.

A car with a driver costs US$55–100 a day in 2026, which normally includes fuel, the driver's meals and his accommodation. That is a daily rate, not a per-journey price: the honest way to think about it is that a Colombo to Ella transfer eats most of one day of it. Anyone quoting you a fixed one-way transfer price is welcome to do so, but ask what happens to it if you want to stop at Ravana Falls, and agree the figure in writing before you get in.

## Which one to pick

| Option | Door to door | Rough cost | Who it suits |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Car to Nuwara Eliya, train down from Nanu Oya | Two days, with a night in Nuwara Eliya | The car's daily rate, plus a few hundred rupees for the train | Anyone who came here for the train ride |
| Direct bus via Ratnapura | 8–9 hours in one sitting | Roughly LKR 1,000–2,000 (US$3–6) | Budget travellers with one small bag and patience |
| Car with driver, direct | 6½–8 hours via Ratnapura and Wellawaya | US$55–100 a day, fuel and driver's board included | Families, short trips, anyone arriving tired off a flight |
| Car with driver via Kandy and Nuwara Eliya | Nine hours of driving — take two or three days over it | The same daily rate, across more days | First trips to Sri Lanka, and anyone who wants the hills |
| Through train from Colombo Fort | Not running as of 16 September 2026 | — | Nobody yet. Watch the line, not the blogs |

*Costs checked 16 September 2026, at about LKR 328 to the US dollar in mid-September 2026. Train and bus fares change less often than the exchange rate does.*

## What the through train was — and what people online are describing

Two named day trains did this journey before the line was cut, and they are the ones every older article names. The Podi Menike left Colombo Fort at around 05:55 and reached Badulla in the late afternoon; the Udarata Menike left at 08:30 and arrived in the early evening. Colombo Fort to Ella was nine to ten hours, Kandy to Ella six to seven, and the observation saloon at the back of each train was the seat everybody wanted and few got.

That is worth knowing for two reasons. It tells you what you are reading when a blog post describes boarding at Fort at dawn, and it tells you what to expect when the line comes back, because Sri Lanka Railways will almost certainly restore these same services under these same names rather than invent new ones. It also sets expectations about the ride itself: ten hours on a wooden bench in a crowded carriage is a long day, and plenty of people who have done it end up recommending exactly the half-journey that is running now.

## When it reopens: what to book and how

Assume, when the line is whole again, that the Podi Menike and the Udarata Menike return to their old morning departures from Colombo Fort, with the Kandy connection made at Peradeniya Junction a little over three hours out. Do not assume the times above survive unchanged — the department reissues the hill country timetable most years, and it will certainly reissue it after eighteen months of repairs. The first reliable version will appear on railway.gov.lk and at station counters, not on travel sites.

Reserved tickets are sold through the official portal at seatreservation.railway.gov.lk and open thirty days before departure. In the December to March and July to August peaks the reserved seats on this line go within hours of the window opening, so set an alarm for the date rather than shopping around. Unreserved third class is sold at the station on the day only, which is why it is the fallback when everything else has gone; board at the origin station if you want any chance of a seat.

| Class | What you get | Our view |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Second class reserved | Assigned seat, fans, windows that open | The sensible choice, and you can still stand in the doorway |
| Third class unreserved | No seat guarantee, windows wide open, crowded | The most fun and the least comfortable |
| First class observation | Rear carriage, air-conditioned, sealed glass | Reflections in every photograph. We would not |

*Classes on the hill country line, unchanged by the closure.*

> **A word on resellers:** Agencies sell Nanu Oya to Ella seats at US$15–30 for a ticket that costs a few hundred rupees at the counter. Some are booking genuine reserved seats and charging for the errand, which is fair enough if you are not in the country yet. Others are selling you a queue you could have joined yourself. Either way, know which one you are paying for.

## The practical things people get wrong

- Nanu Oya is the station for Nuwara Eliya, not in it. The town is about seven kilometres and twenty minutes away by tuk-tuk, and local buses run the gap every twenty or thirty minutes from beside the station.
- Sit on the right descending from Nanu Oya towards Ella, for the tea slopes and the drop. Coming back up from Ella, sit on the left. The doorway beats both, and the only rule that matters is not leaning out on a bend or in a tunnel.
- Send your luggage round by road. If you have a driver, have him take the bags to Ella and meet you at the station — you ride unencumbered and skip the scramble at the far end. This is the single biggest advantage of doing it our way rather than independently.
- Ella station is a ten-minute walk above the main street. Tuk-tuks wait at the entrance and charge a few hundred rupees into town; most guesthouses in Ella itself are walkable, though the ones up towards Little Adam's Peak are a steep fifteen minutes with a bag.
- Buses do not reliably keep to a timetable. Ask at the counter what time the next one leaves, take that as a guide, and be on it early if you want a seat.
- If you are going on to Horton Plains, do it from Nuwara Eliya before you take the train down, not from Ella. The pre-dawn drive is far shorter from that side.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is there a train from Colombo to Ella in 2026?**

Not a through train. As of 16 September 2026 trains from Colombo Fort run only as far as Rambukkana; the sections onward to Kandy and from Kandy up to Nanu Oya are closed for Cyclone Ditwah repairs. The Nanu Oya to Ella and Badulla section reopened on 20 June 2026, with two trains a day each way, so you reach Nanu Oya by road and take the train from there.

**How long did the Colombo to Ella train take?**

Nine to ten hours before the line was cut. The Podi Menike left Colombo Fort at around 05:55 and the Udarata Menike at 08:30, both running through Kandy's junction at Peradeniya and reaching Badulla in the late afternoon or early evening. Kandy to Ella was six to seven hours of that. Those timings are pre-cyclone and will be reissued when the line reopens.

**How do I get from Colombo to Ella right now?**

Three ways. Drive or take a car with a driver to Nuwara Eliya, sleep there and take the train down from Nanu Oya — the scenic option. Or take a direct bus towards Badulla, eight to nine hours for roughly LKR 1,000–2,000. Or go door to door by car in six and a half to eight hours via Ratnapura and Wellawaya. Checked 16 September 2026.

**How much is the bus from Colombo to Ella?**

Roughly LKR 1,000–2,000, or about US$3–6, bought at the counter; an air-conditioned intercity seat was quoted at around LKR 1,700 in mid-2026 and an ordinary bus costs a few hundred rupees. Buses leave from Bastian Mawatha in central Colombo and from the Makumbura centre at Kottawa. Websites advertising the route at LKR 6,000 or more are selling private minibus seats.

**How long does it take to drive from Colombo to Ella?**

Six and a half to eight hours direct, via Ratnapura, Balangoda, Beragala and Wellawaya, depending on how long it takes to clear Colombo. The prettier route through Kandy and Nuwara Eliya is about nine hours of driving and should be broken over two or three days. A car with a driver runs US$55–100 a day in 2026, including fuel and the driver's board.

**Which side of the train should I sit on from Nanu Oya to Ella?**

The right, going down towards Ella, for the tea estates and the drop into the valley. Coming back up from Ella towards Nanu Oya, sit on the left. Standing in an open doorway is better than either and entirely normal here, provided you do not lean out on a bend or in a tunnel.

**When will the Colombo to Kandy and Kandy to Ella trains run again?**

On 5 September 2026 the Railway Department's Chief Engineer said Colombo Fort to Kandy via Peradeniya was expected to resume in October 2026 — an intention rather than a published timetable. No date has been given for the Hatton to Nanu Oya section above it; the ministry's revised deadline for the whole Colombo to Badulla line is 31 December 2026. Until both reopen there is no Kandy to Ella train and no Colombo to Ella train.
