# Places to visit on Sri Lanka's east coast

*Trincomalee to Arugam Bay in the months the south is rained on, with the drive times, the park fees and which beach suits whom.*

Sri Lanka's east coast runs from Trincomalee and Nilaveli in the north through Pasikuda and Batticaloa to Arugam Bay, and it is at its best from about May to September, when the south-west monsoon is soaking the south. Give it five to seven nights. Trincomalee is five to six hours from Colombo by car and two and a half from Sigiriya.

## Key facts

- **Season:** Roughly May to September, with April and early October as shoulders. November to January is the wet side of the year here.
- **Colombo to Trincomalee:** About 260 km, five to six hours by car with a driver. The night mail train takes about eight and a half.
- **Sigiriya to Trincomalee:** About 100–115 km, two to two and a half hours.
- **Colombo to Arugam Bay:** About 320 km, six to seven hours. From Ella, about 130 km and three hours.
- **Pigeon Island, park charges:** USD 25 per foreign adult, USD 15 per child aged 6–12, plus a USD 10 group fee and LKR 300 per vehicle, plus 18% tax. The boat is extra, around LKR 15,000 per boat (checked October 2026; see the note).
- **Whales off Trincomalee:** Roughly March to September, most reliable May to August. Shared boats from about USD 30–45 (September 2026).
- **Surf at Arugam Bay:** April to September is the core season, sometimes running into October.
- **Trains, 2026:** Colombo Fort to Trincomalee and to Batticaloa both running again since 20 January 2026, after the Cyclone Ditwah suspension.

## When is the best time to visit the east coast of Sri Lanka?

May to September. Sri Lanka's two monsoons take turns on opposite sides of the island. The south-west monsoon, roughly May to September, rains on Colombo, Galle and the western hills; the north-east monsoon, roughly December to February, rains on Trincomalee, Batticaloa and the north. October and November, the second inter-monsoon, bring Bay of Bengal storms and wet weather almost everywhere.

The numbers make the point: Trincomalee averages roughly 25 mm of rain in June and 50–60 mm in July, against 340–375 mm in each of November and December.

| Months | Weather and sea | What it means for a trip |
| --- | --- | --- |
| January and February | North-east monsoon; rough sea, grey days | Plan the south coast instead. Much of Arugam Bay is shut. |
| March and April | Drying out; afternoon storms possible | April is a fair gamble, cheaper, with the season just starting. |
| May and June | Dry, sea settling | Good, and quieter than the peak. Whale boats running at Trincomalee. |
| July and August | The settled middle of the season | Best sea and busiest weeks, with domestic holidays and Arugam Bay at its fullest. |
| September | Still dry, crowds thinning | Often the best-value month of the season. |
| October to December | Inter-monsoon, then north-east monsoon | Heavy rain likely. Boats to Pigeon Island can stop running. |

> **Sources, checked October 2026:** Monsoon periods from the Department of Meteorology's Climate of Sri Lanka page (archived copy of 26 April 2024; the live site no longer carries it). Trincomalee monthly rainfall from weather2travel.com and the 1991–2020 normals in Wikipedia's Trincomalee climate table; the two disagree by a few millimetres, so the ranges above cover both.

## How the east coast fits together

A line about 250 km long with five stops. Trincomalee sits at the top, with Uppuveli about 6 km north of town and Nilaveli about 16 km. Pasikuda is a little over two hours south, Batticaloa roughly 35 km below it on its lagoon, and Arugam Bay about two hours further, beyond Pottuvil. There is no expressway, just a single-carriageway road through fishing towns and lagoon country.

The coast is far from Colombo but close to the Cultural Triangle, and that is the planning trick: Trincomalee is two to two and a half hours from Sigiriya or Habarana, and Arugam Bay about three hours from Ella. Come in at the top from the ancient cities and leave at the bottom for the hill country.

This coast sat inside the conflict zone for much of the civil war and took the full force of the 2004 tsunami, so tourism only restarted properly after 2009; the towns are working places rather than resorts. Cyclone Ditwah hit the Batticaloa, Ampara and Trincomalee districts hard in late November 2025; the railway was back by January 2026.

## Trincomalee, Uppuveli and Nilaveli

The best base for a first visit. Trincomalee town is a working port, so most people sleep at Uppuveli or Nilaveli and drive in. Three nights is about right.

### Fort Frederick and Koneswaram

The Portuguese fortified the headland in the early 1620s (sources give 1622 to 1624), the Dutch took it in 1639, and the British, there from 1795, named it after the Duke of York. It is still a military site with a checkpoint, but visitors walk through to Koneswaram, the Shiva temple on Swami Rock, rebuilt in the twentieth century after the Portuguese pulled the original down for the fort's stone. Entry is free; shoes off, shoulders and knees covered.

### Uppuveli, Nilaveli and Marble Beach

Uppuveli is the sociable one, with guesthouses, dive shops and places to eat on foot. Nilaveli, about 10 km further north, is wider and emptier, and the Pigeon Island boats leave from its beach. Marble Beach, towards China Bay, is a sheltered bay run by the Sri Lanka Air Force since 2011, with a small charge at the gate for which we have no current figure. Dutch Bay, beside the fort, is a town beach for an evening walk.

### Pigeon Island National Park

A granite island about a kilometre off Nilaveli and the most popular morning on this coast. Bleaching and trampling have damaged the coral near the landing beach, and sections are roped off; the reliable part is the blacktip reef sharks and turtles. Take the first boat and swim away from the landing.

| Charge | Amount | How it is levied |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Foreign adult | USD 25 | Per person |
| Foreign child, 6–12 | USD 15 | Per person |
| Group fee | USD 10 | Per vehicle or group |
| Vehicle ticket | LKR 300 | Per vehicle |
| Tax | 18% | On the total |
| Boat from Nilaveli | Around LKR 15,000 (2025); earlier reports from LKR 8,000 | Per boat, six to eight seats |
| Hours | 06:00–18:00; ticket counter 06:00–16:00 | Daily, weather permitting |

*Park charges as published for 2025 from the 2022 gazette, the last schedule we could confirm. Tax applies to the total. The boat is hired separately on Nilaveli beach and priced per boat, not per person.*

> **Pigeon Island fees: last confirmed October 2026:** The Department of Wildlife Conservation's fee page does not load, so these figures come from amazinglanka.com's 2025 schedule (gazetted in 2022), read on 15 October 2026. For two adults sharing a vehicle the park charges come to about USD 35 each before the boat, which fits the USD 35–55 all-in our Nilaveli page reported in September 2026. Ask for a printed ticket; visitors have reported wrong prices quoted at the counter.

### Whales and diving out of Trincomalee

Whale boats leave Trincomalee harbour at dawn for a half day. Published seasons disagree; our whale-watching guide takes roughly March to September, most reliable May to August, with sperm whales the likelier big sighting and far fewer boats than at Mirissa. Diving runs roughly April to September from Uppuveli and Nilaveli.

## Pasikuda and Kalkudah

Pasikuda (also Pasikudah or Passikudah) is a crescent bay where a reef across the mouth keeps the sea flat and shallow for hundreds of metres: the calmest swim on the coast and the answer for small children. It is a planned resort zone built mostly after 2010, with no town to walk into; Valaichchenai, the nearest town and station, is a few kilometres inland. Kalkudah, round the headland, is the opposite: open beach, waves, little development. Two nights covers both.

Pasikuda in detail:

## Batticaloa

A lagoon town, the lagoon about 56 km long. The Portuguese fort of 1628, taken by the Dutch on 18 May 1638, still houses government offices. The 28-metre lighthouse of 1913 stands about 5 km out along Bar Road where the lagoon meets the sea. The reason to stay a night is an hour in a boat at dawn among the mangroves and birds; the singing fish under the Kallady bridge are a legend with a 1954 recording behind it, and most visitors hear nothing.

Give it half a day or one night between Pasikuda and Arugam Bay. It is the cheapest stop on the coast, and the food is eastern Tamil and Muslim cooking rather than tourist menus. Maduru Oya National Park, inland near Manampitiya on the Polonnaruwa road, is rarely worth the detour on a short trip.

## Arugam Bay, Kumana and the south-east

One road on a sand spit, built around the right-hand point at the end of the bay. The core season is April to September, sometimes March to October; from about mid-November to February much of the town closes. Main Point is for confident surfers. Beginners use Baby Point, the inside of the same headland, and Peanut Farm, about twenty minutes south; Whiskey Point, about 6 km north, is the step up. Two or three nights in season.

For non-surfers: Pottuvil lagoon by boat, Lahugala Kitulana for elephants, and Kumana National Park, about 30 km south at the Okanda gate, roughly an hour away. Kumana is a bird park first, best from about April to July, with far fewer jeeps than Yala.

> **Kumana: fees and closures, checked October 2026:** The foreign adult fee is quoted from USD 10 to USD 25 (amazinglanka.com: USD 12 adult, USD 6 child, from the 2022 gazette; tuktukrental.com, re-checked 30 March 2026: USD 25), plus a group fee, vehicle ticket, 18% tax and the jeep. Get an all-in figure in writing. The park shut for rain from 28 November to 1 December 2025 (Ada Derana), and on 2 September 2026 its campsites closed for drought with no reopening date (Newswire). We found no fixed annual closure.

## Which east coast beach is best for you?

The right beach depends on who is swimming. Outside May to September, assume none of them is reliable.

| Beach | Swim months | Reef and snorkelling | Surf | Who it suits |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Uppuveli | May–Sep | Dive shops on the beach; reef trips by boat | No | Travellers without a car, divers, anyone who wants to walk to dinner |
| Nilaveli | May–Sep | Pigeon Island, a kilometre offshore by boat | No | Space, long walks, snorkellers, families who want shallow sand |
| Marble Beach | May–Sep | Clear, sheltered water | No | A calm day trip from Trincomalee |
| Pasikuda | May–Sep | Reef across the bay mouth; short boat trips | No | Small children, nervous swimmers, resort stays |
| Kalkudah | Calm days, May–Sep | No reef shelter | Shore break, not a surf spot | Empty sand and long walks |
| Kallady, Batticaloa | Not recommended | None | No | An evening walk; the current is real |
| Arugam Bay | Calm days, Apr–Sep | Little | Point breaks, Apr–Sep | Surfers, solo travellers, people who want a scene |
| Okanda | Not recommended | None | Points for intermediates and up | Surfers with transport, on the way to Kumana |

*Swim months are the settled season, not a guarantee. There are no lifeguards on any of these beaches.*

## How do you get to the east coast, and how long are the drives?

By car, train or plane. These are the times a driver plans for, not the map minimum: journey planners put Colombo to Trincomalee under four hours, which does not happen.

| Leg | Distance | Time |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Colombo to Trincomalee | About 260 km | 5 h to 6 h |
| Colombo to Pasikuda | About 290–300 km | 6 h to 7 h 30 |
| Colombo to Arugam Bay | About 320 km | 6 h to 7 h |
| Kandy to Trincomalee | About 180 km | 3 h 30 to 4 h |
| Sigiriya or Habarana to Trincomalee | About 85–115 km | 2 h to 2 h 30 |
| Habarana to Pasikuda | About 115 km | 2 h 15 to 3 h |
| Trincomalee to Pasikuda | About 110 km | 2 h 15 to 2 h 30 |
| Pasikuda to Batticaloa | About 35 km | About 45 min |
| Batticaloa to Arugam Bay | About 115–120 km | 2 h to 2 h 30 |
| Pasikuda to Arugam Bay | About 145 km | 3 h to 3 h 30 |
| Ella to Arugam Bay | About 125–135 km | 2 h 45 to 3 h 30 |

*Car with driver, daytime, one short stop. Ranges reflect the transfer operators we compared (Lakpura, arugamtaxi.com, pickuptaxisrilanka.com) and Rome2rio as a floor, all read on 15 October 2026. Add an hour if you leave Colombo or Kandy in the rush hour.*

The Central Expressway's missing Kadawatha to Mirigama link was about half built in May 2026 and is not expected before 2028, so these times will hold for a while.

> **Trains to Trincomalee and Batticaloa, checked October 2026:** Cyclone Ditwah cut both lines in late November 2025. Trincomalee day trains resumed on 20 December 2025; on 20 January 2026 the overnight mail (21:30 from both ends, about eight and a half hours) and the Batticaloa trains returned daily, the Udaya Devi leaving Colombo at 06:00 and the Pulathisi Intercity at 15:15 (Newsfirst, 20 January 2026). Seat61 listed both routes running on 10 June 2026. For Pasikuda, get off at Valaichchenai. Confirm times with Sri Lanka Railways.

Cinnamon Air flies daily from Bandaranaike International to China Bay (Trincomalee) and Batticaloa; its winter schedule from 1 November 2026 leaves at 14:30.

## East coast or south coast?

Let your dates decide: December to March belongs to the south, May to September to the east. If either works, the south has more variety close to Colombo; the east has emptier beaches and far fewer people. October and November are poor on both.

## Frequently asked questions

**What is the best time to visit the east coast of Sri Lanka?**

May to September, when the south-west monsoon is on the other side of the island and the east is dry with a flat sea. July and August are the most settled and the busiest; April and early October are shoulders. From November to January the north-east monsoon brings heavy rain here, over 300 mm a month at Trincomalee, and the Pigeon Island boats can stop.

**What resorts are on the east coast of Sri Lanka?**

The resort hotels cluster in two places: the planned resort zone along Pasikuda bay, built mostly after 2010, and the line of beachfront hotels at Nilaveli north of Trincomalee. Uppuveli and Arugam Bay are mostly guesthouses and small hotels, and Batticaloa has town hotels. We do not rank individual hotels here.

**How many days do you need on the east coast?**

Five to seven nights: three around Trincomalee and Nilaveli, two at Pasikuda with an afternoon in Batticaloa, and two at Arugam Bay. With three or four nights, pick one end. Trincomalee pairs with Sigiriya, two to two and a half hours away; Arugam Bay pairs with Ella, about three hours away.

**How long does it take to get from Colombo to Trincomalee?**

Five to six hours by car with a driver for roughly 260 km, whatever the journey planners say. The overnight mail train leaves Colombo Fort at 21:30 and takes about eight and a half hours, and Cinnamon Air flies daily to China Bay. Most travellers avoid the long drive by arriving from Sigiriya or Habarana.

**Is there a train to Trincomalee or Batticaloa in 2026?**

Yes. Both lines stopped after Cyclone Ditwah in late November 2025. Trincomalee day trains returned on 20 December 2025, and from 20 January 2026 the night mail and the Batticaloa trains run daily again: the Udaya Devi leaves Colombo at 06:00, the Pulathisi Intercity at 15:15. Check Sri Lanka Railways for current times.

**How much does Pigeon Island cost?**

USD 25 per foreign adult and USD 15 per child aged 6 to 12, plus a USD 10 group fee, LKR 300 per vehicle and 18% tax: about USD 35 each for two adults. The boat from Nilaveli is extra, around LKR 15,000 per boat in 2025. The official fee page does not load; these figures were last confirmed on 15 October 2026 from a published 2025 schedule.

**Can you swim on the east coast in December?**

Rarely, and we would not plan a beach holiday around it. December is the middle of the north-east monsoon on this side, with heavy rain, rough sea and murky water, and Arugam Bay is largely shut. For a December beach trip go to the south or west coast, which is calm from about December to March.

**Is Arugam Bay safe to visit?**

Yes, with ordinary precautions. The US Embassy told its citizens to avoid Arugam Bay in October 2024 after a threat report and lifted that on 13 November 2024. As of October 2026 neither the US advisory (Level 2, issued October 2025) nor the UK travel advice (updated 21 September 2026) names it. Both mention old landmine risk in parts of the north and east, which matters off-road, not on the beach.
