# 2 weeks in Sri Lanka: Two weeks, and the parts of the island most people never reach

14 days, 13 nights · Airport · Anuradhapura · Sigiriya · Trincomalee · Kandy · Nuwara Eliya · Ella · Yala · South coast · Galle · https://srilankatour.travel/itineraries/14-days

**Who it suits:** Two weeks is the first length where you can add a second region without amputating the first. It is also the length at which the trip stops being a tour and starts being a holiday.

**The trade-off:** The east coast leg only works from about May to September. In the December-to-March window you swap Trincomalee for more time in the Cultural Triangle and on the south coast, which is a good trip but a different one.

**Best months:** May to September for the version with Trincomalee; December to March for the south-coast-heavy version · **Total driving:** About 24 hours in total, spread over thirteen nights

## Day by day

### Day 1: One night by the airport, on purpose

Base: Negombo · Drive in: 20 minutes from the airport (12 km)

In a fortnight you can afford the night that shorter trips cannot. Negombo is twenty minutes from arrivals, has a long beach, a genuinely good fish market at dawn and twenty-five Portuguese-era churches. It also means you start day two rested rather than four hours into a drive.

### Days 2–3: The old capital, which almost nobody gives two nights

Base: Anuradhapura · Drive in: 3 hours 30 (170 km)

Anuradhapura was the capital for over a thousand years and the site is enormous — you drive between the dagobas rather than walk. The Sri Maha Bodhi is grown from a cutting of the tree the Buddha sat under and has been tended continuously since the third century BC, which makes it the oldest documented planted tree on earth. Mihintale, the hill where Buddhism arrived in Sri Lanka, is twenty minutes east and is 1,840 steps.

> **Note:** This is a working pilgrimage site, not a ruin. White clothing is normal, shoulders and knees covered is required, and shoes come off more often than at Sigiriya.

### Days 4–5: Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa

Base: Sigiriya or Habarana · Drive in: 1 hour 30 (70 km)

Two nights, three sites, and no rush. Sigiriya at opening on the first morning, Dambulla the same afternoon. Polonnaruwa on the second day by bicycle. Minneriya in the late afternoon if the Gathering is on, which between July and October it usually is.

### Days 6–7: The east coast, in the right season

Base: Trincomalee or Nilaveli · Drive in: 2 hours 30 (110 km)

This is the leg that separates a fortnight from ten days. Nilaveli and Uppuveli are wide, quiet, pale-sand beaches with a fraction of the south coast's crowd, and from roughly May to September the sea here is flat while the south-west is being rained on. Pigeon Island is a short boat ride and has the best accessible snorkelling in the country. Koneswaram temple sits on a cliff above the harbour.

> **Note:** Reverse this in the north-east monsoon. From about October to January the east is wet and the south-west is not, so in a December trip you drop this leg and add nights on the south coast instead.

### Day 8: Back inland

Base: Kandy · Drive in: 4 hours (180 km)

The longest single drive of the fortnight, and the only one over three and a half hours. Break it at Dambulla for lunch. Kandy in the evening for the puja at the Temple of the Tooth.

### Day 9: Into the tea country

Base: Nuwara Eliya · Drive in: 3 hours 30 (77 km)

Tea factory on the way up, and if Horton Plains appeals, the 05:00 start goes here. World's End is a nine-hundred-metre drop and it is cloud by nine in the morning, so there is no leisurely version of this.

### Days 10–11: Two nights in Ella

Base: Ella · Drive in: 2 hours 30, or the train from Nanu Oya (55 km)

Little Adam's Peak before breakfast, the Nine Arch Bridge at a train time, Diyaluma Falls on the second day. If you want the hill country train ride, board at Nanu Oya — as of 16 September 2026 the section above it from Kandy was still closed for cyclone repairs.

### Day 12: One night, one park

Base: Yala or Udawalawe · Drive in: 2 hours 30 (95 km)

By this point in a fortnight you may already have had elephants at Minneriya, which makes Yala and its leopards the more interesting choice. Go on an afternoon drive on arrival and a dawn drive the next morning, then move on.

### Day 13: The coast, properly this time

Base: Mirissa, Weligama or Tangalle · Drive in: 2 hours 30 (110 km)

Tangalle if you want quiet and a long empty beach, Weligama if you want to surf, Mirissa if you want restaurants and a whale-watching boat at dawn. This is the day of the trip with nothing scheduled in it, and it should stay that way.

### Day 14: Galle Fort and out

Base: Galle, then fly · Drive in: 1 hour, then 2 hours 30 to the airport (40 km + 160 km)

Breakfast inside the fort, the ramparts, the lighthouse, and the shops in the Dutch houses along Pedlar Street. Then the E01 to Katunayake. Most long-haul departures leave between midnight and three in the morning, which means the last day is genuinely a full day.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is 2 weeks too long for Sri Lanka?**

No. Two weeks is the length at which the trip stops being a series of transfers. It buys you the second-tier sites almost nobody reaches — Anuradhapura with two nights, Polonnaruwa by bicycle, the east coast — plus enough unscheduled days that you are not tired when you fly home.

**What is the best 14-day Sri Lanka itinerary?**

A clockwise loop: Negombo, Anuradhapura, Sigiriya, Trincomalee, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, a national park, the south coast and Galle. About twenty-four hours of driving over thirteen nights, with two nights in five of the stops. In the December-to-March season, drop Trincomalee and put those nights on the south coast instead.

**Should I add the east coast or the north?**

The east, if you are travelling between May and September. Trincomalee and Nilaveli are two and a half hours from Sigiriya and the sea is flat while the south-west is under the monsoon. Jaffna and the far north are a genuinely different country — Tamil, Hindu, flat, hot — and deserve four or five days of their own rather than a night bolted on.

**How much does 2 weeks in Sri Lanka cost?**

Excluding international flights, roughly US$760–1,150 per person budget-friendly, US$1,750–2,700 comfortable with a private driver throughout, and from about US$4,800 premium. A driver for fourteen days costs about the same as for seven per day, so the daily rate does not climb with the length of the trip.

**Do I need a driver for two weeks, or can I use trains and buses?**

Both work. Public transport is extremely cheap and reaches almost everywhere, and a fortnight is long enough to absorb the waiting. What you lose is the ability to stop — the tea factory you passed, the roadside kade with the good hoppers, the afternoon light on the way down from Ella. Most people who have done it both ways take the driver the second time.
