# Minneriya

*The largest gathering of wild elephants anywhere, when the water is low enough*

Region: Cultural Triangle · https://srilankatour.travel/places/minneriya

Minneriya National Park is built around a reservoir dug in the third century by King Mahasena. Each dry season the water drops, the exposed bed grows fresh grass, and elephants walk in from the surrounding jungle to eat it. Enough of them arrive at once that the event has a name — the Gathering — and it is the largest seasonal congregation of Asian elephants recorded anywhere in the world, with herds of 150 to 300 reported on the tank bed at the peak.

The part most pages leave out is that the water level is set by irrigation engineers, not by the tourist season. When the tank is held high the grass never appears, and the elephants go somewhere else. That has happened, badly, within the last five years. Everything useful about planning a trip here follows from that one fact.

## Our verdict

The Gathering is real but it is not guaranteed at Minneriya on any given day. Elephants follow the grass. Ask your operator where the herds actually are the week you travel, and book a park, not a postcard.

## Highlights

- **July to October, with August and September at the centre.** The congregation tracks the drought. July is the build-up, August and September are the height of the dry season and the peak of the numbers, and October usually tails off as the rains return. Outside that window there are still elephants in the park, but there is no Gathering — the grass is under water.
- **Minneriya or Kaudulla — the honest answer.** In 2019 water transfers from the Moragahakanda scheme began filling the Minneriya tank through the dry season and drowned the grass. By 2021 the Gathering had effectively collapsed at Minneriya, with reports of a 90% drop in elephant numbers as herds shifted to Kaudulla. Irrigation and wildlife officials coordinated releases from 2022, and the Gathering was reported back in full force in 2024 and 2025. That recovery is real, but it depends on a release schedule that can change. Kaudulla sits in the same elephant corridor on the same fee band and is the standard substitution when the herds move.
- **Hurulu Eco Park, the third option.** Hurulu sits in the migration zone between Minneriya and Kaudulla, which is why it often holds elephants when neither park does. Entrance is around USD 18 to 20 and a private jeep about LKR 10,000 for a three-hour half day as of September 2026. It is part of a UNESCO biosphere reserve and far quieter than either national park.
- **Take the afternoon drive.** Minneriya is the rare Sri Lankan park where the evening drive beats the dawn one. The elephants come down to the tank in the late afternoon, so a half-day safari starting in the early afternoon puts you on the bed at the right time. Sunrise drives run too, and they are the quieter option, but they are not where the animals are.
- **Habarana is the base.** Habarana is about 20 minutes from the gate, free hotel pickup from there is standard in packaged safaris, and it puts Sigiriya at 30 minutes, Dambulla a similar distance and Polonnaruwa at about 45. One night in Habarana buys you a safari and a second Cultural Triangle site without moving hotels.

## Practical

- **Time needed:** 3 to 4 hours for one safari; one night in Habarana
- **Drive times:** About four and a half hours from Colombo; 20 minutes from Habarana, 30 from Sigiriya, 45 from Polonnaruwa
- **Park fees:** Entry fee plus a service charge of roughly USD 8 to 10 per vehicle, a vehicle permit of LKR 150 to 500 and 18% VAT. Jeep hire is separate. Published entry rates disagreed as of September 2026 — confirm on booking.
- **Best months:** July to October for the Gathering; August and September are the peak
- **Nearest airport:** Bandaranaike International (CMB), Katunayake

## Frequently asked questions

**Is the elephant gathering at Minneriya or Kaudulla in 2026?**

Nobody can tell you in advance, and anyone who does is guessing. The herds go where the grass is. When the Minneriya tank is held high by irrigation releases they move to Kaudulla or into the Hurulu corridor; when it draws down on its natural rhythm they come back. Conditions in 2024 and 2025 were reported as good at Minneriya. The practical answer is to have your operator check where the animals were in the past few days and book that park.

**What months is the Minneriya elephant gathering?**

Roughly July to October, with August and September the strongest. The congregation is driven by the dry season: the lower the tank, the more grass on the bed and the more elephants walk in to feed. From November the northeast rains refill the reservoir and the Gathering disperses.

**How much does a Minneriya safari cost?**

All-in packages sit at roughly USD 45 to 65 per person for two people sharing a private jeep, and the per-head figure drops as the group grows. That normally covers the jeep and driver, your park entry, the entry charged for the driver and vehicle, the service fee and VAT. Park fees themselves were disputed between sources as of September 2026, so ask for the breakdown in writing rather than a single number.

**Is a morning or evening safari better at Minneriya?**

Evening, which is the opposite of the usual advice for Sri Lankan parks. The herds move down onto the tank bed through the late afternoon, so an early-afternoon start has you in position as the numbers build and gives you the low light as well. Take the morning drive only if you want the park quiet and are willing to trade animals for it.

**Where do you stay for a Minneriya safari?**

Habarana, about 20 minutes from the gate and the town the safari trade runs out of. Sigiriya works too and puts you nearer the rock for a dawn climb the next day. Polonnaruwa is about 45 minutes away and makes sense if the ancient city is your reason for being in the area at all.
