Car with driver
A car, and someone who knows the road
The most common way to see Sri Lanka properly, and the one thing worth spending on. Roads here are slow, narrow and worth watching rather than negotiating.
Distances in Sri Lanka look small and drive long. Colombo to Kandy is 115km and takes three to four hours. The roads are narrow, busy, and shared with buses that treat the centre line as a suggestion. Almost everyone who has a good trip here has a driver.
A driver in Sri Lanka is not a chauffeur. They are a guide, a translator, a fixer who knows which stall does the good kottu, and the person who tells you to leave Sigiriya at 6am so you climb before the heat rather than in it.
01What to expect
The price includes more than you think
A standard day rate covers the vehicle, fuel, the driver's meals and the driver's accommodation. You are not asked to book them a room. If a quote looks unusually cheap, that is usually what has been left out.
English, and often more
Every driver we work with speaks English well enough to explain a temple, argue a parking fee, and check you are actually enjoying yourself. Some speak German, French, or Russian — tell us and we will match you.
Licensed and insured, genuinely
Tourist transport in Sri Lanka requires a specific licence and insurance class. We check both. It is an unglamorous detail that matters enormously if something goes wrong.
The itinerary stays yours
You are not on a tour. If you want to stay another night in Ella because the light was good, that is a message to your driver, not a change fee.
02What people pay
Real numbers, not a brochure
Typical market rates as of August 2026, in US dollars, per day, including fuel and the driver's own board. Rates move with fuel prices and season — December to March is peak.
| Option | Typical range | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Sedan | $55 – $80 | Two to three people with normal luggage. The usual choice for couples. |
| SUV | $70 – $100 | Three to four people, more comfortable on hill-country roads. |
| Minivan | $90 – $160 | Five to eight people, or four who want the space. |
| Mini coach | $170 – $220 | Nine to fourteen people. Groups, extended families. |

03Straight answers
Questions people actually ask
How much does a car with a driver cost per day in Sri Lanka?
As of August 2026, expect roughly US$55–80 per day for a sedan, $70–100 for an SUV and $90–160 for a minivan. That normally includes fuel, the driver's meals and the driver's accommodation. Rates rise in the December-to-March peak season.
Do I need to pay for the driver's hotel room?
No. Standard practice in Sri Lanka is that the day rate covers the driver's food and lodging — most guesthouses keep simple driver accommodation. If a quote excludes this, ask why.
Should I tip my driver in Sri Lanka?
Tipping is customary but not compulsory. Around US$5–10 per person per day is normal for a driver who has looked after you well over a longer trip.
Can I drive myself in Sri Lanka instead?
You can, with a Sri Lankan recognition permit alongside your home licence. Most visitors decide against it after a day in the traffic. Driving is on the left, and overtaking customs take some adjusting to.
Can I change the itinerary once the trip has started?
Yes. You are hiring a car and a driver, not buying a fixed tour. Extra days and route changes are agreed directly with us and charged at the same daily rate.
No obligation

A rough month and a rough idea is enough to start. We will come back with a shape for the trip, and you can pull it apart from there.
