Sri Lanka with friends

Surf, hills, late dinners and a driver who waits up

Groups get the best value in Sri Lanka by a wide margin. A van and driver split four or six ways is cheap per head, and a whole staffed villa often works out less than a hotel room each.

It is also the trip style where self-drive makes most sense — several drivers sharing one car, no fixed schedule, and the freedom to stay an extra night somewhere that turned out to be good.

01What we would tell a friend

  • Split a villa, not rooms

A four-bedroom villa with staff and a pool routinely beats four hotel rooms on both price and quality. This is the single biggest saving available to groups.

  • Surf on both coasts

Arugam Bay on the east from about May to September, the south coast from November to April. Whatever month you come, one of them is working.

  • Self-drive or a van

Six or more, take a van and a driver. Two to four with licences, self-drive is cheaper and more fun — we deliver the car to the airport.

  • The driver waits up

If you are out late, your driver knows and plans for it. Nobody is stranded in a town with no tuk-tuks at 1am.

02Straight answers

Questions people actually ask

  • Is Sri Lanka cheap for group travel?

It is one of the best-value destinations in Asia for groups, because the two biggest costs — a vehicle with a driver, and accommodation — both divide. A van at $120 a day between six people is $20 each.

  • Where should we surf in Sri Lanka?

Arugam Bay on the east coast from roughly May to September, and the south coast around Weligama, Ahangama and Hiriketiya from about November to April. The monsoons alternate, so there is always a working coast.
