Places to visit in Sri Lanka
38 places worth building a trip around, grouped into seven regions that form one anticlockwise loop out of the airport — Cultural Triangle, hill country, south coast, home. Ten days covers that circuit comfortably and seven at a push. Every entry carries fees, best months and honest drive times; for the experiences rather than the map, start with things to do in Sri Lanka.
The loop runs inland first, because most flights land between one and four in the morning and the roads north are empty at that hour. It then climbs to Kandy and the tea country, drops to a national park, and finishes on the south coast an expressway hour and a half from the terminal. It never doubles back, which is the whole point — the ranked lists you will find elsewhere jump Colombo to Sigiriya to Jaffna to Trincomalee, a route nobody could drive.

Cultural Triangle
Two ruined capitals, a cave temple and a rock fortress, all within about an hour and a half of each other on the dry plain north of Kandy. Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa were both US$30 for a foreign adult on the Central Cultural Fund's list in late August 2026, which makes this the most expensive region on the island to sightsee in.

Kandy and the hill country
Kandy to Nuwara Eliya is seventy-seven kilometres and three and a half hours, which tells you everything about the roads up here. This is tea, cold nights, long walks and the train line, and it is the region people most often wish they had given an extra day.

Colombo and the west coast
The airport sits at Katunayake, about 35 km north of Colombo and fifteen minutes from Negombo, which is why most trips begin and end on this coast rather than in the city. Colombo itself is one full day, and it works far better at the end of a trip than at the start.

The east runs on the opposite monsoon to everywhere else: roughly May to September is its dry season, while the south and west are wet. Trincomalee is five to six hours from Colombo and Arugam Bay six to seven, so neither is a stop you wedge in — each is a decision about what the trip is.

Wildlife parks
Yala has the densest leopard population on the island and the jeep congestion that comes with it; Udawalawe has elephants in every season and a fraction of the traffic. Minneriya, up in the Cultural Triangle, is the third of the set and the one that holds the Gathering from July to October.

The north
Jaffna is a flat, hot Tamil peninsula of palmyra palms, lagoons and Hindu temples that was cut off for most of the war and reachable by road and rail again only since the 2010s. Its dry window is mid-January to August, the opposite of the south coast, and October is its wettest month.

If you only have ten days
Ten places, in the order you would drive them, with the one fact about each that changes how you plan the day. This is the classic loop, and there is a reason it is classic: nothing on it is more than four hours from the thing before it.

Sigiriya
Roughly 1,200 steps to a palace on top of a granite plug, with almost no shade on the way. Be on the steps when the gate opens or you are climbing a hot staircase behind a queue.

Dambulla
Five caves of painted rock and 150-odd Buddhas, about 300 steps up and cool inside. The temple sets its own fee rather than the Central Cultural Fund's, and foreign visitors were paying somewhere around LKR 1,500 to 2,000 through 2026.

Polonnaruwa
The ancient capital that makes sense without a guide, because most of it was built in one reign. The ruins run along a four-kilometre axis, so hire a bicycle rather than walking it.

Anuradhapura
Thirteen centuries of capital spread over about 40 square kilometres, and still a working pilgrimage site. Ticket counters run 7am to 5pm; two hours here is how people conclude the place is repetitive.

Kandy
The last kingdom, the Temple of the Tooth and the botanical gardens at Peradeniya. The inner shrine opens only for the three daily pujas, at 05:30, 09:30 and 18:30, and the evening one is the one to aim for.

Nuwara Eliya
The highest town on the island at 1,868 m, and the base for Horton Plains. The park gate opens at 06:00 and World's End is under cloud from about 09:30 on virtually every day of the year, so this is a dawn trip or it is nothing.

Ella
Two nights: one for Little Adam's Peak and the Nine Arches Bridge, one for a longer walk. Neither the bridge nor the Little Adam's Peak trail charges an entry fee, and both start walkable from the town.

Udawalawe
The safari to spend your one safari on if you want to watch animals rather than chase them — elephants are reliable here in every month. The Elephant Transit Home next door feeds orphaned calves at 10:30, 14:30 and 18:00.

Yala
The densest leopard population in the country, and the worst jeep congestion. Blocks 1 and 2 were announced as closed from 14 September to 15 October 2026 for drought — the closure happens most years but the dates are set annually, so check before booking.

Galle
A Dutch fort still lived in, and free to walk — you pay only for the museums inside. The ramparts are punishing between 11:00 and 15:00, so walk them at sunrise or after 16:30.

Which places fit which trip length
The number of days you have decides the shape of the route far more than your preferences do. These are the four we build most often, each with the places it stops at and what it gives up.

You see the Cultural Triangle and the edge of the hills, and you skip the coast entirely. Five days is not enough for both, and the itineraries that claim otherwise are quietly asking you to spend two of your five days in a car.

The east coast leg only works from about May to September. In the December-to-March window you swap Trincomalee for more time in the Cultural Triangle and on the south coast, which is a good trip but a different one.

What are the top tourist places in Sri Lanka?
Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura in the Cultural Triangle; Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella in the hill country; Yala and Udawalawe for wildlife; Galle, Unawatuna and Mirissa on the south coast; Colombo and Negombo on the west. That is eleven or twelve places, and it is the standard ten-day loop. Trincomalee, Arugam Bay and Jaffna are the additions that turn a loop into a longer trip.
What are the top 5 places to visit in Sri Lanka?
Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella, Yala and Galle. They are also the five that everyone else visits, which is worth knowing before you commit to them. If you wanted five that are just as good and much quieter, we would send you to Polonnaruwa, Haputale, Udawalawe, Trincomalee and Jaffna instead.
What is the best month to go to Sri Lanka?
February, if the dates are yours to pick. The south and west coasts are in their dry window from December to March, leopards at Yala concentrate around what water is left from February, whale boats run out of Mirissa, and the hills are at their clearest from January to April. The east is the opposite: Trincomalee and Arugam Bay are at their best from about May to September. Our best time to visit guide goes through it month by month.
Where do most tourists visit in Sri Lanka?
Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella, Yala and Galle, in that loop and usually in that order. What they miss is mostly a matter of one turning: Polonnaruwa is a better first ancient city than Anuradhapura and gets skipped; Haputale has the best half-day in tea country and Ella has the crowds; Udawalawe delivers elephants while Yala's Block 1 draws twenty jeeps to one leopard. The north and the east are missed altogether by the great majority of two-week trips.
How many days do you need to see Sri Lanka?
Ten. Seven covers the classic loop but with one night everywhere and about fifteen hours of driving. Ten gives you two nights in three or four of the stops. Fourteen adds a second region — the east coast, or the Cultural Triangle done properly — without amputating the first. Five works only if you accept that you are seeing one half of the island.
Is the north of Sri Lanka worth visiting?
Yes, if you have two weeks and an interest in the place rather than a checklist. Jaffna is a different culture, language and cuisine, and it is quiet in a way the south has not been for a decade. The honest caveats are the drive, the heat and the season: it is a long day on the A9 or a flight from Ratmalana, it is consistently the hottest part of the island, and its dry window runs mid-January to August, so it does not pair neatly with a December south-coast trip.
Which places can you skip?
Our unpopular opinion: if your trip is under ten days, skip Nuwara Eliya town. The country around it is the reason to go up there, and if you are not doing Horton Plains at dawn you can take the same tea country from Haputale or Ella with less driving. On the coast, Hikkaduwa's reef is not what its reputation says — go for the turtles and fish, not for coral.
