Hill country

Mist, tea, and a town that knows exactly how photogenic it is

The Nine Arches Bridge curving through dense green hillside near Ella.

About Ella

Ella sits in a gap in the hills at about 1,000 metres, which means cool nights, cloud that pours through the valley in the late afternoon, and tea in every direction. It is the most popular town in the Sri Lankan highlands and it has changed a great deal in ten years.

That is worth saying plainly: Ella is busy, the main street is cafés and tuk-tuk drivers, and the famous bridge has people on it. It is also genuinely beautiful, and twenty minutes' walk in any direction gets you out of all of it.

01Worth your time

  • Nine Arches Bridge

A stone viaduct built without steel, curving through jungle. Best early, when the light is low and the crowd is small. A train crossing makes the photograph, but train timings on this line are not currently reliable — see the note below.

  • Little Adam's Peak

Forty-five minutes up through tea, and the easiest big view in Sri Lanka. Do it at sunrise or in the last hour of light.

  • Ella Rock

Two to three hours, considerably harder, and much quieter. Take someone who knows the way — the path is unmarked and the shortcuts are how people get lost.

  • Lipton's Seat

An hour and a half away by tuk-tuk, above Haputale. Thomas Lipton's viewpoint over his own estates, and on a clear morning you can see all the way to the south coast.

Questions people actually ask

  • Is Ella worth visiting?

Yes, but go in with realistic expectations. It is the busiest town in the hill country and the main street reflects that. The walking, the tea estates and the views are excellent and remain so.

  • How long should I spend in Ella?

Two nights is right for most people. One night means rushing Little Adam's Peak and the Nine Arches Bridge in the same day. Three or more if you want Ella Rock and Lipton's Seat as well.

  • What is the best time to see a train at Nine Arches Bridge?

Historically several crossings a day, with the mid-morning one most photographed. However, the hill-country line was badly damaged by Cyclone Ditwah in late 2025 and services have been restored in phases, so timings should be confirmed locally on the day rather than taken from an older blog post.
