The highest density of leopards anywhere, and the jeeps that come with it

About Yala
Yala has the highest concentration of leopards recorded anywhere in the world. It also has, in peak season, a great many jeeps trying to find them, and a sighting can turn into a traffic jam within minutes.
We will say the unpopular thing: Yala is not always the right choice. If you want a wilder, quieter park, Wilpattu is better. If you want a near-guaranteed elephant morning, Udawalawe is better. If you specifically want a leopard, Yala is where the odds are.
01Worth your time
Go at dawn, not mid-morning
The gates open early and the animals are moving. By nine the heat has set in and everything sensible is lying down under something.
Block One is busiest
The most-visited sector has the best leopard odds and the most vehicles. Other blocks are quieter and still productive.
The park closes
Yala normally closes for around a month each year for conservation, typically in September. Confirm before building a trip around it.
It is not only leopards
Sloth bears, elephants, crocodiles, and some of the best birdlife on the island. People who fixate on the cat miss the rest.
02Straight answers
Questions people actually ask
What is the best national park in Sri Lanka?
It depends what you want. Yala has the best leopard odds but the most vehicles. Wilpattu is larger, wilder and much quieter. Udawalawe is the most reliable for elephants and good for a shorter trip.
Will I definitely see a leopard in Yala?
No. Yala has the highest leopard density in the world, which improves the odds considerably, but these are wild animals in dense scrub. Anyone guaranteeing a sighting is not being straight with you.
When is Yala National Park closed?
Yala usually closes for around a month each year for conservation, most often in September. Dates move, so confirm before planning a trip around it.
