Ten is the number we would give if you only asked once. Seven covers the classic loop but with one night everywhere and about fifteen hours of driving. Ten lets you have two nights in three of the stops. Fourteen adds a second region — the east coast, or Anuradhapura properly — without amputating the first. Five works only if you accept that you are seeing one half of the island.

Anticlockwise from the airport for most trips: inland to the Cultural Triangle first, then Kandy, up into the tea country, along to Ella, down to a national park, and finish on the south coast before the expressway back to the airport. It never doubles back, and the long airport transfer happens in the small hours when most flights land and the roads are empty.

Because they are what actually happens. Outside the four expressways, almost every road here runs through the middle of every village it passes, with no bypasses, and the realistic door-to-door average is 30–40 km/h. Mapping apps understate Sri Lankan journeys by roughly a third. Kandy to Nuwara Eliya is seventy-seven kilometres and three and a half hours.
