Kalutara
The first proper beach south of Colombo, and mostly a way to skip the city

About Kalutara
Kalutara sits where the Kalu Ganga — the black river — reaches the sea, about 43 kilometres south of Colombo. It is the first proper beach town on the road south, which is the entire reason most travellers end up here: it is close enough to the airport to reach on the day you land and far enough from Colombo to avoid spending your first or last night in city traffic.
The landmark is the Kalutara Chaitya, one of very few hollow Buddhist stupas anywhere, which you walk inside rather than around. The site was the Gangatilaka Vihara until the Portuguese destroyed it and put a fort on the spot; the modern stupa went up over it in the second half of the twentieth century. That layering — temple, fort, temple again — is a reasonable summary of this stretch of coast.

The stupa you walk inside
The Kalutara Chaitya's concrete dome is 30.5 metres across with a shell only 140 millimetres thick — the first thin hemispherical shell built in Sri Lanka. Inside are 74 murals of the Buddha's life and four smaller chaityas. The foundation was laid in 1964, the pinnacle topped in January 1974, and the relics deposited and the pinnacle unveiled on 28 February 1980. The Bodhi tree beside it is a sapling of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi at Anuradhapura.

Richmond Castle
An Edwardian mansion built between 1900 and 1910 on a hill above the river, put up by a local landowner with a taste for Indian palace architecture. Entrance was LKR 1,000 as of early 2026. It takes about an hour and pairs naturally with the stupa as a half-day.

The Kalu Ganga
River-mouth and mangrove boat trips run from here, the same category of trip as the better-known Bentota and Balapitiya runs further south, which cost around USD 20 to 35 for roughly an hour and a half. Going from Kalutara means you are on the water before the coach parties reach Balapitiya.
- 04
The beach, and what it is not
A long, wide strand at the river mouth, noticeably quieter than Bentota 21 kilometres south, with a string of resorts behind it rather than a strip of bars. There is very little to walk to in the evening. That is the trade: space and calm in exchange for eating where you sleep.

Thudugala Ella, if you have a spare hour
A waterfall with a bathing pool in the rubber country inland from town. It is a short detour rather than a destination, and access and any fee are worth checking locally before you drive out — we could not confirm either as of September 2026.

Questions people actually ask
Is Kalutara worth visiting?
As a stop, yes. It has one genuinely unusual building in the hollow stupa, a good half-day with Richmond Castle and a river trip, and a wide quiet beach an hour from Colombo. As a destination in its own right it is thin — there is not much to walk to after dark, and Bentota and the south coast have more of everything except the drive time from the airport.
How far is Kalutara from Colombo airport?
About 80 kilometres. Allow up to two hours depending on how you clear Colombo, or less if your driver takes the expressway around the city. From central Colombo it is around 43 kilometres and roughly an hour on the E01.
Can you go inside the Kalutara stupa?
Yes, and that is the point of it. The Kalutara Chaitya is a hollow stupa — the 30.5-metre dome has a shell only 140 millimetres thick and encloses a chamber lined with 74 murals of the Buddha's life, with four smaller chaityas inside. Shoulders and knees covered, shoes off at the entrance.
What is the best time of year for Kalutara beach?
December to April. This is the southwest coast, so it follows the same calendar as Bentota and Galle: dry and sunny through the northern winter, and wet with rough sea during the southwest monsoon from roughly May to September. If you are travelling in July or August, the east coast is the right side of the island.
What are the main places to visit in Kalutara?
The Kalutara Chaitya and the Bodhi tree beside it, Richmond Castle on the hill above the river, a boat trip on the Kalu Ganga, and the beach at the river mouth. Thudugala Ella is inland if you want a waterfall. That is comfortably a half day, which is why most people pair it with Bentota or treat it as an airport-side night.
