What is the best 7-day route in Sri Lanka?

Anticlockwise: airport to Sigiriya, down to Kandy, up into Nuwara Eliya, along to Ella, down to Udawalawe or Yala, out to the south coast and back to the airport on the expressway. It never doubles back on itself, which matters when a wasted leg costs you three hours.

Can I do the Kandy to Ella train in a week?

Part of it, as of August 2026. The Nanu Oya to Badulla section — which includes Ella, Demodara and the Nine Arch Bridge — reopened on 20 June 2026 after cyclone repairs. The Kandy to Nanu Oya stretch above it was still closed at the time of writing, so the through journey is not currently possible. Boarding at Nanu Oya gives you the scenic half. Check the current position before you plan around it.

Do I need a driver for a 7-day trip?

It is the normal way to do this route and it is what most of our travellers choose. Seven days on public transport covers roughly the same ground but you lose the better part of three days to waiting and connections. A car and driver for a week runs about US$55–100 a day including fuel and the driver's own board.

How much does a week in Sri Lanka cost?

The most common length of trip we are asked to arrange, and the shortest that reaches the hill country without the whole week becoming a drive.

What this one gives up

Seven days gets you the interior and a taste of the south, but you will not also see the east coast, Jaffna or Trincomalee. Trying to add them turns a good week into a bad one.

01Day by day

Nothing on day one but the drive and a shower. Most long-haul flights land in the small hours, which makes this the fastest road transfer you will get all week — the same drive at four in the afternoon is an hour longer.
Day 2Sigiriya
Sigiriya, Dambulla, and elephants if the season is right
Local
Sigiriya at opening for the same reason as always — heat and queues. Dambulla's cave temples in the early afternoon. Then, if you are here between roughly July and October, Minneriya or Kaudulla in the late afternoon for the Gathering, when several hundred elephants come down to the reservoir as it dries back.
Which of Minneriya, Kaudulla and Eco Park has the elephants shifts with the water level from month to month. Ask on the day rather than booking a specific park weeks ahead.
Day 3Kandy
The last flat road for a while

Kandy in the afternoon: Peradeniya gardens if you arrive early enough, the Temple of the Tooth at the evening puja if you do not. Kandy divides people. It is a working city with traffic and it is not picturesque in the way Ella is, but the temple is the spiritual centre of the country and the gardens are extraordinary.
Day 4Nuwara Eliya
Seventy-seven kilometres, three and a half hours

Look at those two numbers together, because they explain Sri Lankan road travel better than anything else on this page. The road climbs to 1,900 metres through tea estates in a continuous series of switchbacks. Stop at a working tea factory on the way — Labookellie or Damro, both on the route — and arrive in the afternoon to a town that thinks it is in Surrey and is fifteen degrees colder than the coast.
Pack one warm layer. Nuwara Eliya drops to about 10°C at night and hotels there very often have no heating.
Day 5Ella
Into Ella, by train if you want the ride

The famous hill country railway runs from Nanu Oya — Nuwara Eliya's station, twenty minutes out of town — down through Haputale to Ella and Badulla. As of August 2026 that section is running; the stretch above it from Kandy is not. So this is where the train fits in a seven-day trip: board at Nanu Oya, ride the good part, and let your driver take the bags round by road.

Day 6Udawalawe or Tissamaharama
Down off the escarpment, and a safari

The road out of Ella drops fifteen hundred metres in about an hour and the temperature climbs the whole way. Udawalawe is the reliable one for elephants — you will see them, in numbers, in open country. Yala has the leopards and the crowds; if a leopard is the point, go to Yala and accept the queue of jeeps.
Afternoon drives start around 14:30. An early check-in and a same-day drive works, and it saves you a night.
Day 7South coast, then fly
The coast, briefly, then out

A morning on the south coast — Mirissa or Weligama for the beach, Galle Fort for the ramparts at the end of the day — and then the E01 expressway north to the airport, which is quick and dull and gets you there. If your flight is after midnight this works comfortably. If it is a morning departure, sleep near the airport instead.
