Anuradhapura
A capital for thirteen centuries, and still a place people come to pray

About Anuradhapura
Anuradhapura was the seat of government from the fourth century BC until a Chola invasion took it in 993, which is about thirteen hundred years — longer than most European countries have existed. For much of the millennium that followed the jungle had it back.
What was cleared out is not a ruin field in the Roman sense. The great stupas are whitewashed and maintained, the terraces around them are swept, and on a full-moon poya day there are thousands of people in white walking between them with lotus flowers. You are visiting an archaeological site and a working pilgrimage centre at the same time, and the second one takes precedence.

The Sri Maha Bodhi
Grown from a cutting of the tree the Buddha sat under, carried from India and planted here in 288 BC, and tended by an unbroken succession of custodians since. Guinness recognises it as the oldest tree on earth with a documented planting date. It sits behind gold railings up a short flight of steps, and it is at its best just after opening, before the coach groups.

Ruwanwelisaya
Built by King Dutugemunu around 140 BC, and the one that gets on the postcards: 103 metres tall with a circumference of 290 metres, painted brilliant white, ringed by a wall of stone elephants. Shoes come off at the edge of the terrace, and by mid-morning that terrace is hot enough to matter.

Jetavanaramaya, and what it used to be
King Mahasena's stupa, begun in the late third century AD, is bare red brick rather than whitewash — roughly 93 million baked bricks. It stands 71 metres today. At its original 122 metres it was the third-tallest structure in the world, behind only the two great pyramids at Giza.

Cycle it, or take a tuk-tuk
The monuments are strung across roughly 40 square kilometres of flat, largely traffic-free parkland on shaded lanes. Guesthouses hire bicycles by the day. Walking between the major clusters is not realistic, and a car spends most of its time parking.

The main ticket does not cover everything
The Sri Maha Bodhi, Isurumuniya and Mihintale are ticketed separately — a few hundred rupees each in 2026, paid at their own gates. Budget the small notes and do not be surprised at the second counter.
02Straight answers
Questions people actually ask
What are the main things to see in Anuradhapura?
The Sri Maha Bodhi, Ruwanwelisaya, Jetavanaramaya, Thuparamaya and the Abhayagiri complex with its twin ponds are the core, and all but the Bodhi tree are on the main ticket. Isurumuniya, with its carved lovers, and Mihintale, where Buddhism is said to have arrived on the island, are separate tickets and separate short trips.
How much is the Anuradhapura entrance fee?
US$30 for a foreign adult on the Central Cultural Fund's published list as of late August 2026, payable in rupees at the posted daily rate. Prices are quoted in dollars and revised without much notice, so treat that as a guide rather than a promise, and carry extra small notes for the separately-ticketed sites.
How long do you need in Anuradhapura?
One full day covers the ticketed monuments at a reasonable pace with a bicycle. Two days lets you add Mihintale and see the Bodhi tree early in the morning, which is when it is worth seeing.
What should I wear in Anuradhapura?
Shoulders and knees covered, and shoes and hats removed inside the sacred precincts. Sri Lankan pilgrims wear white here; you do not have to, but you should not turn up in beachwear. Socks are a genuinely useful thing to carry, because the stone terraces get very hot from mid-morning.
Is Anuradhapura worth visiting?
It is, if you want scale and a site that is still in use rather than tidy ruins you can read at a glance. If what you want is a compact archaeological city you can understand without a guide, Polonnaruwa does that better and in less time.
