Sri Lanka tour packages from India

An hour and a half from Chennai, and nothing like the drive you are expecting

Sigiriya rock fortress rising from flat green forest at sunrise.

Colombo is closer to most of south India than Delhi is. Madurai is 55 minutes in the air, Chennai and Bengaluru an hour and 25 minutes, Delhi about three and a half hours. Since 25 May 2026 Indian passport holders have had the 30-day tourist ETA free of charge, though you still apply for it before you fly (checked September 2026). The clocks match IST, the traffic drives on the left, and English works with hotels and drivers. Tamil is widely spoken in the north and east; Hindi is not.

A week buys the loop most people picture: a night near the airport, the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, the tea country, Ella, a stretch of coast on the way out. Four of the seven days carry a real drive, and the worst covers 77 kilometres in three and a half hours.

Two expectations to set. Vegetarian eating is easy, because rice and curry is mostly vegetables anyway. And Sri Lanka is not the cheap option: hotels, transport and heritage tickets cost more than their equivalent in most of India.

01Is this you?

This is your trip if

  • You have seven or eight days, which is what most Indian offices give, and you would rather do one country properly than two badly.
  • You want the hills, the ruins and a beach in one trip, and accept that all three means four days with a drive in them.
  • Someone in the group wants the Temple of the Tooth, Seetha Amman and Ravana Falls, and someone else mainly wants to swim.
  • You are travelling with parents who want vegetarian food at every meal, not improvised at each stop.

Probably not, if

  • The Ramayana-associated sites are the whole point. Munneswaram near Chilaw, Koneswaram at Trincomalee and Nallur Kandaswamy in Jaffna sit north and east of this route. Ask us for that itinerary instead.
  • You have four days. Do the Cultural Triangle or the south coast, and come back for the rest.
  • You are hoping it works out cheaper than a week in Kerala or Himachal. It will not.

Then look at sri lanka tours for people who come to relax or sri lanka tours with a bit of both.

02How the days go

The shape of the trip

1 slow days, 2 active days and 4 on the move. Every trip we send back changes this; the rhythm is the point, not the exact order.

  1. 1

    NegomboSlow day

Land, buy a SIM at the arrivals counter, drive 15 to 20 minutes to the beach. A short flight means you arrive with the day still intact.

  2. 2

    SigiriyaOn the move

North about four hours, with Dambulla on the way in: three hundred steps up to five caves under an overhang, 153 Buddha images and painting applied straight onto the rock.

  3. 3

    SigiriyaActive day

Sigiriya at opening, before the heat: roughly 1,200 steps and almost no shade. Anuradhapura and its Sri Maha Bodhi are a half-day round trip from here.

  4. 4

    KandyOn the move

Two and a half hours down to Kandy, and the Temple of the Tooth at the evening puja, when the inner shrine is opened. Shoulders and knees covered, shoes off.

  5. 5

    Nuwara EliyaOn the move

Seventy-seven kilometres, three and a half hours of switchbacks, 1,900 metres up. Hakgala gardens and the Seetha Amman temple next door are ten kilometres out on the Badulla road.

  6. 6

    EllaActive day

The hill railway down from Nanu Oya if it is running, with the driver taking the bags by road. Ravana Falls is free and roadside on the Wellawaya road, the cave up a steep staircase above it.

  7. 7

    MirissaOn the move

Off the escarpment to the coast, about three and a half hours, then a swim and the expressway north for an evening flight. For a morning departure, take an eighth day.

When to come

The right months for this trip

December to March
The right months for this route, and the ones everyone else wants. The second half of December is the dearest fortnight of the year.
April
Hot, and Sinhala and Tamil New Year on 13 and 14 April fills the hill towns.
May to August
The south-west monsoon. The inland half still works, the beaches on that side do not. If May or June school holidays set your dates, finish on the east coast, dry then.
October and November
The wettest months island-wide and by a distance the cheapest. Heavy afternoon storms rather than constant rain, so a Diwali trip trades afternoons for empty sites.

What it costs

From US$870 per person

Two people sharing, land only, breakfast included, private car and driver throughout. Flights and site entry tickets are extra. Priced on the comfortable tier of our seven-day route. At mid-September 2026 rates, when a dollar bought about 95.6 rupees, that came to roughly 83,000 rupees per person. Treat the rupee figure as an illustration, not a quote.

What this style adds on top

  • Flights. Return fares in early September 2026 ran roughly ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 from Chennai, Bengaluru, Kochi, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli or Thiruvananthapuram, and ₹22,000 to ₹40,000 from Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad or Ahmedabad.
  • Site tickets, the cost people forget. The Central Cultural Fund's table on 2 September 2026 read US$35 for Sigiriya and US$30 each for Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, half tickets US$20 and US$15; it names no SAARC rate, so ask at the counter. The Temple of the Tooth does: LKR 1,500 for SAARC nationals against LKR 2,000.
  • A worked total for two over seven days: land about ₹1.66 to ₹2.58 lakh, flights ₹30,000 to ₹80,000, tickets ₹17,000 to ₹25,000. Call it ₹2.1 to ₹3.6 lakh, before shopping and before a safari.
  • A tourist SIM, LKR 1,399 to 2,450 for 20 to 50 GB on Dialog's official price list as of September 2026: ten minutes and a passport at the arrivals counter. Tipping too, which is built into nothing here, at around LKR 500 to 1,000 a day for a driver.
  • Cash. Carry US dollars and change most of it in town, where the rate beats the airport. Cards cover hotels, ATMs are everywhere, tuk-tuks and donation boxes are not.

Reviewed . Prices move with the season and the hotels you pick; the from-price is the bottom of our comfortable tier, not a quote.

03Straight answers

Questions people actually ask

  • Is Sri Lanka visa free for Indians?

Not visa free, but fee free. With effect from 25 May 2026 the Department of Immigration and Emigration lists India among 40 countries whose nationals get the 30-day tourist ETA free of charge, double entry inside those 30 days. You still apply before you travel, on the official portal at eta.gov.lk, with six months of passport validity. Staying longer means a paid extension in Colombo. Sri Lanka has changed this more than once since 2023, so check that page again close to your dates (checked September 2026).

  • How much does a Sri Lanka trip cost from India?

For two sharing over seven days, land only, our comfortable tier starts at US$870 per person, about ₹83,000 at mid-September 2026 rates. Add return flights of ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 each depending on your city, and ₹17,000 to ₹25,000 between you for entry tickets. A realistic total for a couple is roughly ₹2.1 lakh to ₹3.6 lakh. We do not publish a rupee package price, because the exchange rate and the hotel rates move separately.

  • Which Indian cities have direct flights to Colombo?

Eleven, as of September 2026: Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Kochi, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Thiruvananthapuram and Ahmedabad. SriLankan serves all eleven, IndiGo flies the first five, Air India flies Delhi and Mumbai, and IndiGo also reaches Jaffna from Chennai and Tiruchirappalli. The Nagapattinam to Kankesanthurai ferry exists but starts and stops: suspended from November 2025, back on 6 March 2026, suspended again after an engine failure in May, sailing again by early September 2026. Confirm it before planning a day around it.

  • Which is the best month to visit Sri Lanka from India?

December to March, when Indian and European demand collide, so book early. If May and June school holidays fix your dates, the south-west monsoon is on: the inland half still works, the beaches on that side do not, and the east coast around Trincomalee and Pasikuda is dry then. October and November are the wettest months island-wide and the cheapest by a wide margin, so a Diwali trip trades afternoons for empty sites.

  • Is Sri Lanka cheaper than India?

No, not for a trip like this. Hotels of a given standard cost more than in most of India, heritage and park tickets are priced in US dollars, and a private car and driver runs US$55 to 100 a day including fuel. Food is the exception: a rice and curry costs roughly what it would in a small Indian town. Budget for a dearer week than one in Kerala or Goa.

  • Can I use Indian rupees in Sri Lanka?

Not for paying. Shops, hotels, tuk-tuks and donation boxes take Sri Lankan rupees only, and the Indian rupee is not legal tender there. You can change INR at banks, licensed money changers and the airport, but the rate is usually worse than for US dollars. Carry dollars; cards cover hotels and ATMs. On 12 September 2026 a dollar bought about LKR 328 and a rupee about LKR 3.44.

  • Is vegetarian food easy to find in Sri Lanka?

Easier than most people expect. Rice and curry arrives as rice surrounded by five or six vegetable curries: dhal, jackfruit, beetroot, pumpkin, green beans, coconut sambol. String hoppers, pittu and kottu all come in vegetable versions, beef is rare and pork uncommon, and meat is served separately. The catch is seasoning: Maldive fish, a dried flake, goes into many sambols. If you are Jain, or avoid onion and garlic, tell us when you book and we will brief the kitchens.
